A positive displacement blower is used in many types of pneumatic conveying and process systems. This important equipment is forgotten until it fails. PD blowers operate with a motor driving dual eccentric impellors usually via a pulley and belt transmission system. Dual impellors counter rotate within a cast iron casing. The air within the casing fed through an inlet is trapped between the impellors and the casing and with each revolution the air (or gas) is forced out of the discharge against whatever pressure exists in the system.
The clearances between the rotors and the casing parts are important if the efficiency of the blower is to be maintained. With continuous operation the rotating parts gradual wear of and have to be properly maintained.

Once the gears begin to fail, the Rotor lobes will clash, end clearances will change, thrusting the driven rotor into the free end plate and failed bearings, causing the rotor lobes to clash even further. If detected early, the blower is rebuildable.
The most critical ingredient to blower maintenance is proper lubrication. If not properly lubricated, damage sets in early. It is important not to run or start a PD blower when it’s low on oil because the gears will fail which results in the clash of the rotor lobes making the bearings fail.
If the application involves a corrosive process gas, you may find that your blowers quickly need to be replaced as the interior components of the blower are corroded over time by the gas. In these applications, special coatings or materials can be added to your blower to help protect your equipment and extend its lifespan.
If a critical wear and tear is noticed on the PD blower’s rotating parts it is highly recommended to have a full-service check and a full-service repair to avoid irreparable damage. The PD blower will be disassembled and the seals, bearings and other parts will be thoroughly inspected and repaired at an experienced service centre. Attention should be given to the repositioning of shims, dowels, retainer rings, O-Rings, lubrication, fasteners and fittings.
