Industrial blowers are mainly classified into two types based on the direction of the airflow, centrifugal blowers, and positive displacement blowers. Centrifugal blower uses the centrifugal force generated by a rotating disk, with blades at right angles to the disk that rotates the blades. A rotating impeller is used to move air first radially outwards by centrifugal action, and then tangentially away from the blade tips. The speed increases as the air reach the ends of the blades and are then converted to pressure. These fans can produce high pressures, which makes them suitable for harsh operating conditions, such as systems with high temperatures, moist or dirty airstreams, and material handling. Centrifugal blowers generate a substantial volume of air with very little vibration in a confined space and are usually used in boiler fan, combustion blowers for furnace, rolling mill, dust collector, bag filter, suction blower, and exhaust blower.
Positive displacement blowers use mechanical means to squeeze fluid and thereby increase pressure and velocity as per the needs, unlike centrifugal designs which impart pressure and velocity to media by flinging them outward with impellers. Here rotary lobe or root type is common which uses two counter-rotating lobed rotors to move fluid through the blower. These types of blowers are often driven by direct-coupled electric motors.
